September 2017

Hey there, Jordan here,

I just wanted to start by saying a huge sorry for not posting in what feels like forever!

I’ve been super busy these past few months with college work for my apprenticeship, But I’m pleased to announce that I have a few new blogs to be released super soon.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I was coming back from a holiday down in Cornwall, and let’s just say the traffic was awful! It took over 7 hours to get from Perranporth to Warwickshire. There were only so many times you could listen to the same playlist on Spotify without running out of data, of course it did run out so I ended up listening to BBC Radio Two for a few hours.

One of the stories on there really got my attention, at first it made me really cross, but after a lot of thought, it made me feel really sad. It was about a mother of a three-year-old autistic boy called Henry, who had received a letter of complaint about her child’s noise levels. The letter that had been written was very threatening, and showed how unaccepting society really can be towards those who are different.

The letter said how it was selfish to allow 3-year-old Henry who is non-verbal to scream in the garden. His scream is his way of communication, and doesn’t just show negative emotions, it shows positive emotions too. The person who wrote this letter also said how they felt the screaming was a sign of neglect. The letter written also referred to Henry as ‘it’, which infers that he is seen as less of a person just for being different.

When I got home I googled complaints against children with autism, and I found an endless list of things like this which shows me how unaware the world still is on autism spectrum disorders and other mental disabilities.

People who have been reading my blogs know that the reason I write them is to spread awareness of autism spectrum disorders, and it saddens me when I hear things like this on the radio or the news, where people are unable to accept one another for who they are.

My message from this blog is to be accepting of people around you, remember how you should never make assumptions about others, but accept others for who they are. Don’t be a mirror, but be an individual that you are proud to be.
